Let me break this down in terms anyone can understand:
Picture the infection in your nail as weeds growing under a concrete sidewalk.
The fungus, usually dermatophytes like Trichophyton rubrum, does not sit on top of your nail where you can wipe it off. It enters under the free edge of the toenail and works its way deeper inside. 2mm deep. 3mm deep. Sometimes 4mm underneath the nail plate.
But this fungus is not just sitting there exposed. It has built a fortress around itself.
It is called keratin debris, a packed, compacted layer of dead nail material and fungal waste that coats the infection like a sealed bunker. It is dense. It is layered. It is physically resistant to penetration. It is hydrophobic, meaning it resists moisture. And it is the reason your nail looks thick, yellow, and bulky.
When functioning properly, your nail would grow out at a normal rate and push the damaged section off. But the keratin debris shields the infection like armor.
But YOUR nail? It is under siege. And the weapons you have been given are useless.
You use an antifungal cream? SITS ON THE SURFACE. Bounces right off the hardened keratin barrier.
You file the nail down? TEMPORARY. The infection is embedded in the nail bed beneath. The nail thickens right back up within weeks.
You take oral medication? WORKS THROUGH THE BLOODSTREAM. But reduced circulation after 55 means less reaches the nail bed. And the liver side effects make most doctors stop the prescription early.
You soak your feet in vinegar or tea tree oil? LIQUIDS. They wash over the nail surface. They cannot penetrate a dense keratin barrier any more than water can seep through a sealed plastic container.
There is no problem with your effort. No problem with your consistency. Just a packed keratin fortress that surface treatments physically cannot breach.
Here is what the science now says:
1. The infection lives under and within the nail, not on the surface.
When the fungus enters from the edge of the nail, it colonizes the nail bed and grows upward into the nail plate. The yellow discoloration and thickening you see on top are symptoms of what is happening underneath. That is why surface-only treatments consistently fail. They are working in the wrong location entirely.
2. The nail builds a thick keratin wall that blocks access.
Once infection takes hold, the nail bed produces excess keratin. This keratin packs up underneath the nail plate, making it thicker, harder, and more resistant. The nail builds its own armor. And every cream, oil, and lacquer you apply on top just bounces off. The thicker the nail gets, the less anything can reach through. It is a self-defeating cycle.
3. After 55, nails grow slower and recover slower.
Nail growth rate decreases significantly with age. At 25, toenails grow approximately 3-4mm per month. By 60, that rate drops by half or more. The nail plate also becomes naturally thicker and more brittle. Reduced blood flow means less immune activity at the nail bed. So the fungus has more time to embed, and the damaged nail takes much longer to be replaced. Your body has slowed down. The fungus has not.
4. The damaged nail feeds its own cycle. It rebuilds every single day.
Once the nail becomes thick, warped, and lifted, it starts protecting the problem. Debris stays trapped. Moisture gets caught underneath. The fungal environment stays warm, dark, and undisturbed. This is exactly why debridement visits fail, not because the trimming does not work temporarily, but because nobody maintains the reset afterward. The debris repacks. The fortress rebuilds. The cycle restarts. The only way to keep the nail environment reset is to keep resetting it.

Has anyone actually tried this yet? I'm still a little doubtful, but those photos do look pretty convincing...

For me it worked surprisingly fast. After years of creams and hassle, finally something that actually seems to work deep under the nail. My nails look healthy again. Unbelievable, really.

I bought from nuvocare when it was on sale. Best decision ever. After just a few days the discoloration was already fading, and after a couple of weeks I finally dared to wear sandals again. Why didn't I try this sooner? 😁

@Sarah I was skeptical too, honestly. But this really isn't a standard product. You can literally feel it working under the nail. My podiatrist was even surprised.
